Raikkonen: Biggest problem was neck pain
Monday, 10 September 2007
raikkonen small3Kimi Raikkonen said neck pain from his huge high-speed practice crash was the biggest problem he had to deal with in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

After finishing third behind the dominant McLarens at Monza, Raikkonen admitted Ferrari simply didn’t have enough pace to win.

But he also had to battle considerable physical discomfort as a legacy of his heavy impact with the barrier on Saturday morning (video of the accident).

“Probably the biggest problem was that I couldn’t keep my head upright under braking,” he said.

“My neck is not in such a good shape after yesterday so that was the main issue.”

Ferrari put Raikkonen on a one-stop strategy in a bid to counteract McLaren’s superior pace.

The ploy almost worked, as the Finn leapfrogged Lewis Hamilton for second place following the Briton’s second pit visit.

But he was powerless to resist when Hamilton came charging down the inside a few laps later.

“The car wasn’t too bad,” said Raikkonen.

“In the first stint it was pretty okay. We were heavier than the McLarens so we knew that they would pull away.

“We tried to keep close enough but we were just not quick enough today.”

Raikkonen explained that he was more tentative than usual because of the pain in his neck under heavy braking loads.

“The problem was under braking,” he said.

“It was hard to keep the head up. It didn’t help for sure.

“I tried to do my best but [Hamilton] got too close and got past me.”

Will Kimi beat Alonso in 2013 - 2014 season?
